Operation Kopere

Up Operation Kopere Education Maintenance Book Programme Prayer Support Agriculture Pen Pals

The Vision

Operation Kopere is the most ambitious undertaking of Happy Home since its foundation in 1975. The objective is simple - to relocate the Happy Home Orphanage and Christian Fellowship Centre, together with its children, from the dilapidated buildings at Tamu, to a new permanent location at Kopere.

With the blessings of God and your generosity, the aim is to complete the first stage of the new development in time for the children celebrate Christmas 2007 in their new Home.

The Land

In 2004, Happy Home purchased a 2.5 acre plot of land at Kopere, Songhor, Nyando on which to build the new Happy Home Orphanage and Christian Fellowship Centre.

The new site, in the heart of the Kopere community is blessed with beautiful views across the valley and towards the Nandi Hills

In the absence of funds with which to proceed with the development, the land has been temporarily put to good agricultural use for the production of food for the children of Happy Home.

The Launch

On Saturday 3rd March 2007, Operation Kopere was launched at a ‘breaking of the ground’ ceremony. Rev. George Ochola, Director of Happy Home, made the ‘first cut’ in readiness for the foundations.

The ceremony was attended by elders and children of the Kopere community; Happy Home children, staff and Trustees; as well as HHKT Trustees and supporters from the UK.

The selected contractors for the development project also attended and commenced marking out the foundations for what will become the first of two new dormitory blocks.

The project is planned for multiple phases thereby permitting the continual development over a period over time which fits with both the available funds and the needs of the children.

Phase 1 - Water

The present and main water source for the Kopere community is the river. Water for the new Happy Home will be provided from a water borehole, ensuring a clean hygienic source for the children. The borehole will also be used to provide water for the entire community at Kopere whose only present source is the local river which brings the usual associated health hazards.

The works to be conducted in Phase 1 include:

  • the drilling of the water borehole, and associated works and services; and

  • erection of a nine metre high concrete water tower with two 10,000 litre capacity water storage tanks, one set on a platform at the top and the other on a platform approximately midway. Feeding of the tanks will be facilitated using water from the borehole with assistance of both manual and mechanical pumps.

Phase 2 - Sanitation

A temporary covered latrine pit has been installed at the site for the site watchman Gilbert and his family to use, as well as the construction workers.

Phase 2 of Operation Kopere is for the installation of a septic tank and associated soak pit, with a capacity for up to 200 people and additionally the digging of two, twelve metre deep latrine pits.

These facilities will provide long term sanitation capacity for the new Orphanage when it is built.

Phase 3 - Temporary Facilities

Prior to occupation of the new Happy Home by the children, it will be necessary to provide accommodation for the staff as well as kitchen and dinning facilities for all occupants.

With current restrictions on available funds for Operation Kopere, it has been agreed that temporary buildings of a quality equivalent to the temporary building currently erected at the Kopere site for the site manager, Gilbert.

Early erection of these facilities is important as they can be initially used to securely store building materials, tools etc. as well provide accommodation for a second person to support the site manager with security during the first five phases of Operation Kopere.

Phase 4 - Dormitory Erection

Plans for the new Happy Home include two dormitory blocks, one for boys and one for girls. Each dormitory block shall have the capacity to be occupied by up to fifty children and be divided into separate rooms, each capable of sleeping up to four children sleeping in two sets of bunk beds. In addition, each dormitory block shall have an integrated washroom with toilet facilities, thereby avoiding the need for children to leave the dormitory block during the night.

Given the restrictions on available funds, it has been agreed to proceed at this time with the erection of one dormitory block, which shall be used by both the girls and boys.

Phase 5 - Dormitory Furnishing

Upon completion of the erection of the first dormitory block, it will be necessary to furnish the building with beds, bedding, curtains, mosquito nets, wardrobes and whatever else is necessary to turn the dormitory into a home for our children.

Future Phases

The planning of future phases is presently under consideration and are expected to published later in 2007, once the funding profile for later phases has been determined and agreed.
